Plot Synopsis
Rachel Lapp (Kelly McGillis) takes her son Samuel Lapp (Lukas Haas) on a train to Baltimore to visit Rachel’s sister after Rachel’s husband passes away, as they arrive in Philadelphia their train is delayed. Samuel witnesses a man being murdered in the train station toilets, the Philadelphia police arrive who among them is the lead detective John Book (Harrison Ford) who questions Samuel on who killed the man as he was an undercover cop. Samuel doesn’t identify anyone in the police line up or in the police books, Samuel later recognises one of the culprits in the police station on a newspaper clipping, known as Mcfee (Danny Glover). Book informs his supervisor Schaffer (Josef Sommer), who advises Book to keep quiet about the corruption, Mcfee finds out that Book is onto him and they have a shootout in an underground car park where Book is badly wounded, Book brings Carter (Brent Jennings) into the investigation by telling him to remove all the papers regarding the case.
Book takes Rachel and Samuel back to the Lapp farm, Book being badly injured can’t leave the Lapp farm or go to a hospital. Rachel and her father-in-law Eli Lapp (Jan Rubes) persuade the Amish community elders to allow Book to stay at the farm for shelter as well as keeping Samuel safe from danger, Rachel nurses Book back to health which sparks a growing attraction between them. Eli criticises Rachel about her growing attraction for the ‘English’ and that many of the community members are talking. When Book has recovered he starts to help on the farm mainly using his carpentry skills. On a trip into town Book finds out that Carter has been killed by Schaffer, Book calls Schaffer to inform him that he knows. When a gang of tourists mock the Amish, Book gives away his location when he sticks up for them, that night Rachel goes to Book aware that he is leaving. Morning comes and so does Schaffer and his men as they arrive at the Lapp farm. In the final shoot out Book kills two cops and forces Schaffer to surrender, Book returns to the city and leaves Rachel behind.
